The American Red
Cross has been assisting disaster victims since 1881.
Through a network of local chapters, supported by state lead
units and national headquarters, the Red Cross provides a
nationwide disaster services program of planning,
preparedness, and response to disasters, and participates
with other national Red Cross societies in international
relief operations.
The American Red
Cross is required by Congressional Charter to undertake
relief activities for the purpose of mitigating the
suffering caused by disaster. The Red Cross provides both
emergency mass care and individual assistance to people with
urgent and verified disaster-caused needs. Such help is
given on a standardized basis and includes preplanned use of
available community resources, both public and private.
The Central Alabama
Chapter regularly recruits and trains volunteers in the
twenty-three disaster response functions. These individuals
provide disaster services in our local community and, when
needed, throughout the country.
This
service provides reporting and communication services.
Primarily, this service reports the transmittal of emergency
messages to military personnel both in the United States and
overseas regarding news of serious illness, death or birth
of family members at home. Caseworkers also provide
referral services to military families in our community.
This service is one of the American Red Cross “mandated”
programs, and is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days each
year.
When war,
upheaval, or natural disaster disrupts normal communication,
the Red Cross springs into action, bringing hope and help to
those whose world has spun out of control. International
Social Services volunteers help locate missing loved ones,
reunite families, bridge the communication gap and make
health and welfare inquiries in times of emergency.
Since 1982, Project SHARE (Service to
Help Alabamians with Relief on
Energy) has helped thousands of eligible Alabamians
by providing money to pay energy bills. The program is
funded by monthly donations from customers of participating
energy suppliers like
Alabama Power and
Alagasco.
You can help by saying "YES" to Project
SHARE.
