SHARE because you care

The program is funded by monthly donations from customers of participating energy suppliers.  You can help by adding as little as $1 a month to your energy bill.  Larger gifts should be mailed to:

Monthly contributions are needed throughout the year to build the fund so more families can get the help they need.  Project SHARE demonstrates what can be done when people who care work together.

How does Project SHARE work?
  • The Birmingham Area Chapter of the American Red Cross manages Project SHARE for participating counties throughout central and South Alabama.  Allocations are based on each county's low-income population.
  • Ninety-five percent of donations to Project SHARE are used to pay energy bills.
  • The American Red Cross makes payments directly to the energy supplier, like Alabama Power, or Alagasco.
  • An independent statewide advisory committee oversees the program
Who receives help?

There are two different seasons for Project SHARE.  The criteria for this program changes with each season as follows:

Heating Season (January 1 - June 30)

People with low incomes who are head of the household and:

  • are 62 years or older
  • or are disabled (receiving 100% disability income)

Medical Season (July 1 - December 31)

People with low incomes who are head of the household and:

  • are 62 years or older
  • or are disabled (receiving 100% disability income)
  • household members that have a condition that would be severely aggravated by an energy deficiency will need a a statement from their doctor on his letterhead that states: their diagnosis, medications, and what would happen to their condition if they are without power or heating

Individuals who meet these criteria may call the American Red Cross at (334) 272-3038 and schedule an appointment with a caseworker who will interview them and recommend help based on the eligibility guidelines.  The applicant's past payment record to the energy supplier is also considered.
